The Hunger @ the Egyptian: The finest midnight selection I could imagine. If you have never seen this cult classic, you absolutely must. Catherine Deneuve will rock you senseless as chic rocker vamp Miriam, David Bowie is perfect as her ill-fated lover, and Susan Sarandon is just, well, HOT (and I haven’t even mentioned the steamy sex or Bauhaus' broody Bela Lugosi's Dead moment). This thing is definitely wrapped in a wave of nostalgia for me, but I also think it’s still a great film: beautiful, heart-breaking, and tragic – everything a vampire movie should be. But ohgeez, this trailer is dated:
Amelia @ the Guild 45th, the Meridian and Oak Tree Cinemas: I’m not a particular fan of Hilary Swank and Richard Gere usually makes me want to claw my eyes out, but I do love me some period dramas (Hello 20s and 30s!), especially with an element of romance + I loveloveLOVE Mira Nair, so I’m down for this one. Swank plays doomed pilot Amelia Earhart, and obviously this will focus on her life before she disappeared somewhere over the Pacific Ocean:
Good Hair @ the Meridian: Chris Rock’s daughter apparently asked him why she doesn’t have "good hair", which then spurred him to go on a search around the world to ask everyone what they thought about it – and inspired conversations about how hair and hair styles impact the African American community. Includes interviews with Ice-T, Nia Long, Maya Angelou, Salt ‘n Pepa, Ever, Rev. Al Sharpton and more. I’m diggin’ the trailer:
