Where the Wild Things Are: Love it or Hate it, you have to give a movie props for causing so much debate. I’m personally in the LOVE category, totally in awe of the special F/X, and the way in which it made me remember my childhood struggles with emotional fondness. If you’re at all curious, give it a watch and see how it affects you.
Ponyo (Gake no ue no Ponyo): Anime favorite Miyazaki’s latest, which unfortunately, I haven’t seen yet. This one’s about a goldfish princess (Ponyo) who desperately wants to be human and becomes BFF with a 5-year-old boy, Sosuke. I’m imagining a much better version of the Little Mermaid (although I kind of love that movie too). Of course, I recommend finding the subtitled version, as it looks like this is the Dubbed release. Scarecrow Video, anyone?
We Live in Public: ChrisB covered this during the 2009 Seattle International Film Festival (including an interview with director Ondi Timoner), and I’ve been curious about it ever since. This doc follows Josh Harris, who started an experiment featuring 100 artists living in an underground compound with 24-hour cameras in-their-face-and-everywhere-else. After that tanked, Harris decided to continue with the cameras turned on himself and his girlfriend. Winner: Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
