Dusting off the old albums

With the mediocre (at best) new releases we’ve had over the last few weeks, I find myself dusting off albums I haven’t listened to in a while. In high rotation currently are (in no particular order):

  • Bob Dylan Bringing It All Back Home
  • Pinback Summer in Abadon
  • Mogwai Zidane soundtrack
  • The Knife Deep Cuts
  • Billy Joel Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2

I keep pulling Danzig II off the rack but it hasn’t made it to the CD player yet. Even new releases as bad as we’ve had can’t bring me back to 1995 metal. Anything good you’re in the process of rediscovering?

Metallica! Kill 'em All (well I never!). Metal, yes, but early metal to be sure. Maybe I'll see about downloading some more of the catalog.

..and in a trip from odd pairing world, Kenny Burrell has also been back in rotation.

I'm gearing up to DJ my first official club night, so I have going through ALOT of old records. I've actually heard myself say the phrase, "They just don't make pop songs like the used to," at least twice in the past three weeks.

Highlights include:

The Best of the Shirelles

The Quadrophenia Soundtrack

Happiness Is Being with the Spinners

When I'm just walking around, it's been Pavement (Brighten the Corners,) The Beatles (Magical Mystery Tour,) The Modern Lovers, and Heavenly.

And, Kiku, I don't think the Blues Brothers are embarassing at all. All that matters is that you like hearing it!

The Blues Brothers are great and I've always thought that Magical Mystery Tour was an underated Beatles record (if there is such a thing)

i've actually been listening to more new music than i have in probably close to three years. there are loads of great things coming out right now, much more than anytime in quasi-recent memory.

some older releases that have made it on to my plate recently:
black sabbath 'vol. 4'
freddie fresh 'bbc essential mix' (circa the late 90's)
my bloody valentine 'glider'
primal scream 'xtrmntr'
the stooges 'the stooges'

i recently had the urge to listen to both of these albums and have been listening to them quite a bit.

Gillian Welch - Revelator

Prince - Around the World in a Day

oh, and i recently put They Don't Know About Us by Tracy Ullman on my i-pod and i can't help but feel happy when i listen to that song. i like that Ben Gibbard version a lot too but i don't know where to find it...

Lately I've been enjoying:

Time to Fly - Birth. Work. Death
They're totally over, but I'm not over them

The new Tullycraft
Of course. It took me a couple listens to decide that I loved it and it's effing brilliant.

Fields - Everything Last Winter
Thank you, John Richards

Herb Alpert - Whipped Cream & Other Delights
Classics never go out of style

WEMike at number five: frosting on the beater! Oh man, I haven't heard that album in a long time, I think I'm going to listen to it right now, actually.

Other records I've recently been getting waaaaay back into:

Harvey Danger - King James Version (I hadn't listened to that one in it's entirety for four or five years... sigh)

Randy Newman - Born Again (I forgot how brilliant this album is, and it's probably the best record you can buy for 1.99$, next to pretty much all of Marshal Crenshaw's catalogue)

And Prefab Sprout. just about every album's been reminding me of why they're gol durn amazin'.

When I was all upset about the breakup of The Smiths (hello. I'm old.) the guy who worked at Orpheum Records (hello. I'm old enough to remember that place) suggested I check out Prefab Sprout. So I bought "Two Wheels Good."

I could not get into it.

Instead, I made the mistake of rediscovering Aztec Camera.

there's always the recent reissues of danzig's back catalog as well as the collector reissues of the joy division catalog to coincide with the release of "control".

lately, i've been all up on catherine wheel's "chrome", cybotron's "clear" and michael j. sheehy's "ill gotten gains".

everything by bauhaus is in permanent rotation. and damn if i didn't dig out "the river" after watching "reign over me". springsteen just seems to get to me when i am reminded that i dig him.

Man Man - Six Demon Bag
Say Hi To Your Mom - Impeccable Blahs
Weezers' Blue Album
and
"Life Is A Shipwreck, We Must Remember To Sing In The Lifeboats" - BOAT (would we call this BOAT 'demos'??)

Speaking of say hi, did anyone else snag the new CD off of the internet? With a preorder of the new album that comes out in early 08' you also get a free online download... and a real CD before it hits stores.

It's brilliant.

I've been going back and listening to late 90s Portland bands Hummingfish and Doris Daze.

I'm guessing I was inspired by the plethora of Old Navy and JCPenny commercials on TV featuring The Weepies (Deb Talan is the voice of both The Weepies and Hummingfish).
