Tonight in Seattle:

Last night: Tullycraft! Interpol! The Pogues! WINDSTORM 2007! C'mon, spill some scoop

Last night not only had three of the most tempting live shows I've heard in quite awhile (Tullycraft! Interpol! The Pogues with Shane McGowan!), but also had the most dire weather warnings of the season, at least here in Seattle.

Did you brave the elements and wander out to hear music? If so, who did you see, and what did you think?? Did you lose power at your place? Did you stay home and couch surf?

Share your scoop, everyone....

PS ~ It started thundering as I typed this!! I HEART THUNDER!!!

Me = Lame
I stayed home embraced by the warmth of my heater brought to me with sweet, sweet electricity. However, I heard that, "Tullycraft was awesome! They were great live." Based on what's happening out my window now, I should have gone out last night!

Beyond being very far away from Seattle, I ended up continuing to be trapped by the Red Sox into watching more baseball. Which is a good thing. Really. Maybe someday I can convince Tullycraft to play Davis/Sacramento.

I was on my way back home to seattle from arlington, with an-almost empty gas tank, when the wind start knockin' everything out! I pulled off into Mill Creek, only to find that not only were all gas stations shut down, but several street lights were off! 164th st had become one giant four-way stop, and I was out of gas!

All I could do was crank up In Rainbows, enjoy seeing walmart completely shut down, and hope I could find gas eventually... which I did. phew.

HAIL!!! It's hailing in Ballard!!

I went and saw Interpol on Tuesday in Boise and also last night here in Seattle. They were amazing. I don't know if it was the fact that the whole band is super sexy, or I love everyone of their songs, or just the plain intensity they gave off, but I think that Interpol is by far one of the best bands I have ever seen.

(I heart thunder too, sometimes I really miss the midwest)

-Mr. Kyle

I worked all night. I am lamer than all of you.

Interpol suck balls! Buy the Joy Division albums and call it a day.

Saying that Interpol sucks is nearing blasphemy. Elliott - no nerve to post as yourself?

I stopped by Mars Bar for NadaMucho's "Accosted By The Acoustic" showcase and was very happy that I did...

Ben Harwood from Vindaloo, Jamie Henkensiefken from H Is For Hellgate, Lee Rude from Chelsea Speed Party, a thrillingly talented young woman named Amzeah, and Red Lehman - the man who also booked the evening's lineup for us - contributed to an evening that veered away from folksy navel-gazing to include blues, country, punk, Jamie's hilarious ode to Tina Fey and some impressive Hendrix-style shredding by Mr. Harwood.

I drank a lot of beer and Lee Rude let us all touch his vinyl pants.

Oh, God…. Not that old argument again. Saying that Interpol sounds like Joy Division makes you sound like an ignorant boob. Also, Joy Division was shite without Martin Hannet.

I'm with you, Jimmy Legs @10: I think Interpol have transcended their Joy Division-esque roots. Sure they're dark, but their sound is sexier and fuller than JDs ever was.

I'm sure someone is going to come along and disagree with me, but there ya have it.

I'm really curious as to the attendance at the Interpol show. There seemed to be a lot of free tickets circulating around and Ticketmaster was offering buy one get one free on the Tuesday prior to the show. It didn’t seem like it was promoted very efficiently at all, they should have gotten on board with TIG if they wanted to put butts in the seats, or I guess feet on the pavement, as it was.

Oops!

I didn't notice the topical boundaries you set. I wasn't even aware that any of those bands were playing last night...

I saw Interpol play on an outdoor stage in Tucson once and I thought they were sort of silly. They didn't remind me of Joy Division at all, but perhaps they were supposed to.

@Tim -- I agree. Our review will hopefully be up before the end of today, or else tomorrow... but yea, there were loads of two-for-one tix floating around. But then, WAMU theater is damn big.

@7 and @8 -- Oooh, do we have a tale of two Krauses? How exciting!!

@13 -- The thread was for all shows (or non-show events) in general, but those were three big bad shows that all took place the same night that I'm interested in for a vicarious thrill. I'm still hoping for a commenter from the Pogues show, but maybe they're all still hung over?

I took some pics of Black Kids and Titus Andronicus at CMJ on Wednesday night-- see them over on my myspace.

both shows were totally amazing-- i just love both of these bands so much, definitely recommended.

I think Interpol is pretty derivative of Joy Division, which is fine (and I do actually like Interpol quite a bit), I just find it really funny that they are so very defensive about the comparison. "Us, oh no, we never listened to Joy Division. I don't know what you're talking about. No way. Not us."

Gotta say, his liver is probably hanging by a thread, his teeth look like he held a live grenade in his mouth, and his slur makes him almost entirely unintelligible. But Shane McGowan was fantastic--absolutely brilliant on Wednesday with The Pogues.

I was deadbeat tired and fighting off an enjoyable tonsil ailment, but I decided that since I'd invested 60 bones to see a band I'll probably never experience again, I rallied and went and loved every minute. They played all the Pogues standards you'd ever want to hear (correction--no "Fairy Tale of New York" or "Old Main Drag"), and the sound was clear--neither too loud nor quiet, which surprised me because the venue (Showbox Sodo) kinda reminded me of a large warehouse. A lovely, wonderful evening.

Folks bellowed along lustily with "Dirty Old Town," "If I Should Fall from Grace With God," "Streams of Whiskey" and loads more, while downing multiple shots of Jameson and cheap PBR. The bar must have had quite an evening indeed--it was as if prohibition were set to take effect the next day. One of my friends evidently became violently ill after returning home. Sounds like the aftermath of a Pogues show, yes?

Arrr!

Of course, that wasn't the Thursday show I attended, but I assume Thursday's was just as good.

Oh yea, Wednesday or Thursday, whenever. Your write-up was awesome! I can't believe no "Fairy Tale of New York" tho...

Braved the unbelievably miserable weather to see Interpol at the WaMu. Their playing was excellent, as expected, and the sound there is always good. Their stage presence wasn't anything extraordinary, though.

@12: The Interpol show was definitely not sold out or anything close to it. My first reaction on walking in was shock at seeing actual SEATS on the main floor, almost right up to the stage. WTF? People are expected to sit down for Interpol? Apparently some functionary decided the night before to leave them in place, because the crowd would look way too small if they were removed. Pretty stupid decision, and everyone stood up and crowded to the front anyway, as soon as the music started. There were some cursory efforts on the part of the crowd control staff to keep the aisles clear, which of course were ineffective.

@17: That Pogues show is definitely the one I'd wish I'd gone to, now. Not a superhuge fan, but it sounds like it was a great great show. Shane was surprisingly sober and lucid? Two encores because the crowd just wouldn't leave? Nice!

Thanks to TIG, I totally went to Interpol, and was totally blown away. I went to their show at Sasquatch last May, right after they had said they were going to stop playing new songs live because they didn't want them to show up on YouTube, so I never got a chance to hear any of their new songs. But at the show last night, they killed it. Interpol do NOT fuck around on stage not to mention Carlos D is officially the most badass person alive. The band makes me want to start wearing suits, and smoke cigarettes.

i ventured out to see the tullycraft show, mainly to see math and physics club, never having watched them perform before. disappointingly, they weren't that together. there were a few false starts and a lot of awkward tuning between songs. and their onstage banter?.. well, not so entertaining. they even joked of how one LA reviewer wrote about audience members staring shoeward between songs -- the show was that discomfiting. now, why would one admit that?

they were nice and apologetic and, truthfully, the performance wasn't so bad that it soured me on their music. the frustrating part was that there were a couple songs that hinted at the possibility of a good, tight show. (particularly 'Darling, Please Come Home' and 'Do You Keep a Diary.') i still bought their EP, and i'm willing to see them play live again. i'm really hoping it was just an off night.

funny thing was, i couldn't help thinking they looked like high school teachers. of these subjects:

Charles Bert (vocals/rhythm guitar)- physics
James Werle (lead guitar) - calculus
Evan Jones (bass guitar) - social studies
Kevin Emerson (drums) - economics or maybe french
Saundrah Humphrey (violin) - english (i thought art at first, but on second thought she strikes me as someone who really likes austen -- and i mean that in the most complimentary way)

if anyone knows their day jobs, i'd love to know!

Did anyone go to Tokyo Police Club?!
Interpol was fun- missing the exit to my friend's house after late dinner and ending up halfway to Tacoma...and then getting home to see that my power was out out was not fun.

aww chona.

I thought about it too after we left dinner.. if you knew how to get back home. lol guess not :D

yes.. anyone see TPC? (sounds like a plastic)

Wanna see some fotos

ERENDIRA,

Happy to know that I don't actually LOOK like a database programmer..... ;) (studied music, german and anthropology in college) Read a ton of fiction and DO enjoy Austen...and the social awkwardness of that time period in general.

Thanks for coming to the show! It was NOT our best...don't lose hope though. Come to Neumos on DEC 3rd to see us and Tullycraft and VOXTROT. Promise a better performance.. :)

Honestly, I loved the whole show, and I thought the problems that Math and Physics Club had were just enough to be endearing without being annoying or getting in the way at all. But then, I'm just a big softie. <3

I saw the Pogues show Wednesday night. Despite Shane MacGowan looking like he was dying and slurring through most of his dialog and the first song, he surprisingly pulled his shit together and put on one hell of a show. There was a huge sweaty mass of bodies on the floor singing along to all the old hits, arms around your neighbor and all. Really fun crowd, really fun show. I put the set list and my photos on my blog if anyone is interested.

Oh hi Dan! I didn't realize you were 10 Things Zine Dan!

You all should go over and check out the photos and setlist for the Pogues show. Click thru the photo to check it all out!

Ha, the funny part is people point to me and say "10 Things Dan!" when I'm walking down the street at least once a month (I did 10 Things zine for the decade before we started Tablet). Thanks for the photo plug Dana!
