Songs for an autumn mix

I don't know about anywhere else in the country, but autumn came late to New York this year, and now it's finally here just in time for Halloween.

So, obviously, I had to make an autumn mix. To me, autumn songs are a distinct class -- they aren't as low and pensive as a winter song, but they're still quiet, and maybe just a little more hopeful.

I made a mix that has 53 songs and so far includes (among others) Magnetic Fields, Sufjan, Death Cab, Earlimart, Sea Wolf, The Shins, Arthur & Yu, and Bright Eyes... what would YOU put on an autumn mix? suggestions are welcome!

categories: Arthur & Yu | Bright Eyes | Death Cab for Cutie | Earlimart | Sea Wolf | Sufjan Stevens | The Magnetic Fields | The Shins

"Booksmart Devil" by Silversun.

And I'm curious, which Bright Eyes album were you most likely to pull from?

i took Old Soul Song (or song for a new world order?) from I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Is it legal to make an autumn mix without Yo La Tengo's "Autumn Sweater" on it?

I think I gravitate toward autumnal music year-round: Califone, Iron & Wine, Jose Gonzalez . . . that sort of thing.

I'm a fan of "Songs for a Blue Guitar" when the weather changes. I also anticipate "Autumn Sweater" each Fall like I anticipate "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses each Xmas season.

This Fall I've been super digging new the PJ Harvey record, "White Chald." I think that one is going to be great during the long dark winter.

Metric is my Autumn music. The smooth, jazzy-ness of it really goes with the changing of the leaves and cold. Especially "Police and the Private"...

diana said on November 2, 2007:

To Kyle: Sure thing.

I wish i could get these songs that everyone is suggesting but I don't download music anymore

There are a few Architecture in Helsinki songs that have always really reminded me of the autumn. Most of everything from Fingers Crossed (especially "The Owls Go") and "It'5" from In Case We Die. Probably some others that I forgot. A bunch of Belle and Sebastian songs are autumn sounding...most of the songs from Dear Catastrophe Waitress, "The Rollercoaster Ride" from The Boy With The Arab Strap and a few songs from Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant.

Oooh, and I forgot to mention anything by Carissa's Wierd, of course! Perfectly sad stark and beautiful autumnal music...

'Eve of the fall' by Black Bear / 'Indian Summer' by Beat Happening / 'Good things' by ((Sounder)) / 'Happiest Man on This Plane' by Throw Me the Statue / 'Not to Soon' by Throwing Muses / 'Slow' by My Bloody Valentine / 'Son of a Gun' by The Vaselines.. These songs are all gusts of wind that help me shed my leaves and get ready for winter.

Sera Cahoone! SO fall-tastic. I am gonna second Matthews Breeders pick, but say the whole Title TK record.

And pretty much any Neko Case song fits this bill too...and speaking of, her rarely lauded "backup" singer Kelly Hogan's solo record "Because it Feels Good" is prime for fall listening especially the track "Sugar Bowl"...

Erik Gonzalez said on November 2, 2007:

Ok, I had to think for a bit, but off the top of my head:

"True Affection" by the Blow
"Day for Night" by Matthew Sweet
"A Minor Incident" by Badly Drawn Boy
"Funeral" by Band of Horses
"Between the Moon & the Ocean" by the Bon Savants
"Let's Not Shit Ourselves" (or "Easy/Lucky/Free") by Bright Eyes
"Trailer Trash" by Modest Mouse
"In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel
"Spectacular Views" by Rilo Kiley

I'm not sure if this list is actually songs that are fall-like as much as songs that remind me of fall. Ah contextual memory!

Band of Horses, Cave Singers, Andrew Bird, Iron & Wine, and Simon & Garfunkel are awfully satisfying for fall listening! Also the Long Winters, Death Cab, and Kings of Convenience are long time fall favorites for reals.

Tonika said on September 20, 2008:

i know this is a year later, but it's almost fall again and any song from The Spill Canvas's album "sunsets and car crashes" would be great for a fall mix. especially "so much" or "the night will go as follows"

Ashley said on October 3, 2008:

I agree with Tonika, though we are probably the only ones to read this...my own favorites:

OHIO by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

The First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes

There are a few Her Space Holiday, Band of Horses, Frank Sinatra Youth Group songs that I enjoy as well.
