Sub Pop 20 festival: a preview

I'm getting all atwitter for this weekend Sub Pop 20 festival, which will spread its proverbial wings across the region beginning on Friday. I just know this thing is gonna be spectacular. And how could it not be, given the massive lineup?

To kick off the weekend is Friday night's comedy fest at the Moore Theatre. That night, following the comedy, there's a free 21+ show at Neumo's with Les Thugs and Death Vessel.

And then there's the zenith: the mega-packed two-day festival at Marymoor Park on Saturday and Sunday, with more bands than I can even try to list here. Check out the full lineup.

Armed with the advanced schedule and prepping for long days in the Seattle sun, I feel primed for what I may witness. But I just know there are going to be some unexpected amazingly great sets, and I'm hopeful a few surprise guests and impromptu reunions will join the mix. I can hardly contain myself!

I can't make it out on Friday night, but I'm sufficiently content with the anticipation of what will go down at Marymoor. Fortunately, it looks like this is a festival where all the acts can be seen rather than having to pick between a few playing simultaneously. Full schedule, as listed on Sub Pop's site, follows. My picks shown in bold.

I assume you mean those dates to be... 'JULY'? :)

imaginary dana said on July 8, 2008:

Hahahah. YESSSS.

4

ChrisB said on July 8, 2008:

It says July here, so I think it just says June because Saundrah's on the opposite side of the International Date Line from the rest of us.

Deborah Barnard said on July 8, 2008:

Oh, everything--but especially the Fleet Foxes, Iron & Wine, and Flight of the Conchords. I'm also a wee bit curious about Pissed Jeans, I've been hearing their name thrown about more and more.

Outside of The Vaselines this looks like a serious waste of a weekend. The Fluid had two good songs over a dozen years ago and Flight of the Conchords stopped being funny when they decided a full length album was a good idea. Did anyone ever need to see Green River? No. Will Beachwood Sparks be too high too play? Yes. Are we still talking about Fleet Foxes? Why? Seaweed had some good songs, but most of them were covers. Why aren't Band Of Horses playing? "Oh, but we have Grand Archives!" Give us a break! They suck and we ALL know it! Don't forget your uppers, The Ruby Suns are playing. They are a real downer. Wolf Parade. Too bad your new album isn't as good as your first. Maybe all those side projects weren't such a good idea huh? Kinski. Is it too hard to write some fucking lyrics? I guess so! I'm board just thinking about your band. SP20 is going to be great! I can feel it.

jeff said on July 8, 2008:

Hate to be a downer but I hate festival type shows no matter who is playing (too many people/loud music always sounds better in a club/there is no real connection between band and crowd). If you really want to party like it's 1988, and really I would rather, you'll have to go buy a half-rack of Schmidt (because you barely have two dimes to rub together) and sit around with your friends complaining that the Fastbacks don't play enough. Maybe we could stick 60 sweaty kids in your basement and let 4 of 'em go wild for 30 minutes or so to re-create the feeling of the Vogue or Squid Row. All that said, there really are some great bands playing and Sub-Pop has been one of the best things to happen, culturally, to Seattle, but what I want to know is when can I bring the kids over?

Raf S. said on July 8, 2008:

I agree with Jeff. Reliving the grunge years in Redmond with a bunch of people who weren’t actually there the first time around sounds sad. Sub Pop nights at the Vogue weren’t supposed to be remembered like this. Somewhere things went wrong for Sub Pop. Isn't it strange that last weekend Boston and Styx played at Marymoor Park? I'll bet a lot of the same people are going to the SP20. Grunge goes Redmond? Or Sub Pop moves to the suburbs?

Smile said on July 8, 2008:

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's board.

10

Imaginary Shrie said on July 8, 2008:

@ Deborah: Pissed Jeans is phenomenally loud and great.

I have to disagree with you, from 6 down: Pissed Jeans is great live, so are the Ruby Suns (and they're certainly not a downer)... have you seen them? And really, to say that Comets on Fire and No Age aren't great is a slap in the face. All of these bands aren't grunge... actually most of them aren't.

I'd be willing to be that the people who go are going to see bands they've never seen before and bands they didn't realize were so fucking good. There, I said it. So stop being a hater!

i always thought that people's sunnier disposition would come around once the sun finally poked it's rays from behind the clouds. so come on and take the foil off your windows, turn off your xbox and put your happy face on for obama's sake!

i could do without festivals too but that's no reason to hate on celebrating a label based here in Seattle that happens to have been on the cutting edge of the scene for nearly the entirety of its 20 years. hey, if i could afford to go i'd be there too despite my distaste for such events. i am, however, looking forward to reading what people have to say about the performances and seeing their wonderful pictures sometime next week.

I was at the original Lamefest at the Moore Theatre (Mudhohey, Tad, Nirvana) and after looking at this line-up, this is the TRUE Lame Fest. Have fun suckers!

"hate hate hate" all you guys want. im stoked. Good music, Good Weather, at a decent outdoor northwest setting. YES. on the..EASTSIDE. Im lookin forward to it =)

14

Levi said on July 9, 2008:

I can't believe you don't have Iron & Wine bolded!

I would be very surprised if one of those TBAs weren't Love Battery, seeing as how they just played on KEXP a week and a half ago. But who knows?

Ignoring the haters . . . here's what I'm psyched for:

Seaweed
Low
Mudhoney
Iron & Wine
Flight of the Conchords
Red Red Meat
Comets on Fire
Green River

But I'll see pretty much everything . . . I definitely want to get my ticket's worth!

Oh, and everybody . . .

520 will be closed all weekend!!! Find another way to get there!

ChrisB said on July 9, 2008:

According to Reverb, The Constantines and The Obits are likely to be taking two of the TBA slots.

17

Andy said on July 9, 2008:

As long as you’re all making the trip over "the divide" you may as well pick up your tickets for the James Blunt / Sheryl Crow concert on Aug 30th. Don’t pretend you’re not all going. Iron & Wine is not a huge leap from James Blunt.

18

imaginary dana said on July 9, 2008:

OMG I forgot all about the 520 closure. What horrible timing!

19

chops said on July 9, 2008:

just the bridge will be closed, not all of 520. not that that helps much. but you could go over 90 and head to 520 from there.

i'm not usually into festival-type thingies, either, but decided to give a few a go this summer for a change.

looking forward to the mix of old and new this weekend. only going saturday, so bummed to miss no age and foals.

saw the mono men drinking at tiger tail last night. hmmmm... could they all be in one place to get back for a TBA slot?

Were The Mono Men on Sub Pop? I thought all their albums came out on Estrus.

bblack said on July 9, 2008:

Talk about some bitter people. Let's just pretend the whole thing never happened and wax nostalgic about the past instead of this festival. Some of you folks sound like my Grandpa!

BTW - like the new Wolf Parade album or not, they are fantastic live! Can't wait to see them on Sunday.

22

chops said on July 9, 2008:

@ 20--

erf! you're right. i think they had one sub pop singles club deal, but being from bellingham they were definitely an estrus band. i've been caught up in the grungestalgia.

23

jeff said on July 9, 2008:

To all the hate haters. My only intention previously was to point out that you will not be partying "like its 1988." There are some great bands playing and I hope you and your 4000 closest friends have a blast. I'm sure you all will. I believe when 4000 people got together in '88, we called it a Poison concert. Anyways, I'll be catching BOAT at the Sunset. A small show where I can feel like I'm participating in the show not merely watching it from a distance. Maybe that's this old man's problem but after penny-candy and my VHS tapes of Matlock all I have left in this world is my grunge-nostalgia.

To all the haters. Please hate on. You brighten and color my world with your bile and venom. As the imaginary wagon train circles up to protect their own, remember that you haters challenge my perceived notions of good and bad, right and wrong (and I'm so often wrong) that I can't imagine a world without you.

The Mono Men rumor is good news. Can't wait to see them IN A CLUB again!

jeff said on July 9, 2008:

oh shit I almost forgot

@21--

"Let's just pretend the whole thing never happened and wax nostalgic about the past instead of this festival"

Hey Sherlock, look at the lineup here. Seems to me that if a few bands are reforming just to play the festival it has a little something to do about nostalgia. I'm not making a judgement on that, just letting you know none of us can escape it.

love, Grandpa.

Jon Manning said on July 9, 2008:

Man, no one on here super stoked on Eric's Trip?? I'm really surprised they're playing so early! I cannot wait to see them, it'll be my first time. They are sort of nostalgic, especially considering they officially broke up about 10 years ago. However, they are no strangers to playing one of shows or tours.

Also really excited to see The Vaselines and Seaweed.

anonomonpia said on July 9, 2008:

Jeff, have you considered voting for McCain?
Photobucket
I'll be at the Boat show too! I heard Tullycraft will be playing Crayon covers all night.

I agree with most of the haters, but not the haters of the haters. I hate big shows and I'd really only be interested in seeing The Vaselines anyway. Long hot days in the icky sun, $10 12oz beers, crappy food that costs a small fortune, standing around sound check after sound check, parking or crowded busses. Ugh, no thanks, not worth it.

Otherwise, 1988 was the year I started the first grade, my teacher was pretty cool. I also got my first real tape player and some wicked NKOTB tapes.

Plesko said on July 9, 2008:

Jeff has got soooo right! Where were all of these “fans” back in ’88? They certainly weren’t at Shot Gun Mama at Sqid Row or Dinosaur Jr. at the Central Tavern or Nirvana at the Vogue! The ones who are old enough were probably at Bon Jovi at the Tacoma Dome. 4000 posers who live on the East Side and have told their friends that they were part of Seattle’s grunge scene “back in the day” This whole thing is sad.

28

Imaginary Shrie said on July 9, 2008:

I always heard that Seattle had a lot of pretentious self-righteous music fans, but never believed it until now.

I think the fest is a great idea... and whether you love going to ginormous festivals or not, the concoction of bands playing is pretty darn interesting.

So all you haters... stay home! We don't want you at our sunny, wonderful festival at beautiful Marymoor Park on the EASTSIDE.

Andy said on July 9, 2008:

Shrie,
Don’t forget to pick up your James Blunt tickets. I hear he’s fantastic live!

jeff said on July 9, 2008:

Oh, IGshr*e,

You write that you had "always heard that Seattle had a lot of pretentious self-righteous music fans, but never believed it until now." As a music critic, YOU are, by default and almost by definition, a pretentious self righteous music fan yourself. (I am too, I just don't often do it as publicly.) Rock Critic know thyself!

Don't let us haters get you down though, now go outside and have fun.

love Grandpa.

Imaginary Shrie said on July 9, 2008:

Naaa... I just love music, regardless of what other people think about my tastes. Instead of just talking smack I get out there and write about what I love AND talk smack while doing it.

I don't know if everyone is experiencing this too, but this week has been the Snarkiest. Week. Ever. People everywhere have been short and snippy in my world, real and imaginary. Wacked.

We're always glad to see TIG be a forum for discussion, whether we disagree or not with the topic. But since I'm a fiery Leo who likes to voice my opinion (who me?), I'd just like to add: 20 years of running a record label (or anything, really) is an enormous achievement. In our six years of existence here at TIG we have outlived more bands/labels/music editors than we could count. Sub Pop is like a rock in our music scene here, and while I haven't loved every release they've ever put out -- they had and still have an incredible roster of bands, across all crazy genres, including some personal faves (The Thermals, The Shins, The Postal Service and so, so many more).

20 years is a HUGE milestone and I for one am thrilled that they're throwing a ginormous party (even if it is on the other side of the lake). Of course there's nostalgia involved... they've been around longer than some of their fans have been alive! Bring back the old, bring on the new... it's going to be an amazing weekend of music!

My pretentious and self-righteous imaginary self will step down from the soapbox now....

Not to diminish anything with Sub Pop, which is an outstanding local label that has put out some amazing releases over the past 20 years, but I really hope that we get this big of a celebration for KRS20 in 2011 - and then K30 in 2012 (although we might have to drive down to Olympia for those).
