Festival-worthy numbers of performers, artists, bands, clubs, and labels are joining the Twitter party. What started as a way to answer the question of friends, "What you are doing?", Twitter is becoming the "it" thing for music types to develop and retain fans.
Why Twitter? The 140-character limit and mobile-friendly posting means more artists are giving it a go. Texting a "tweet" is radically faster than a blog post, website update, MySpace edit, or email newsletter. A tweet can be sent with any text-enabled phone. Artists are tweeting from the road, during tours, in studio, and really, anytime the urge hits.
Fans have never before had access like this: it's like a backstage pass with benefits. Closeness -- or, rather, the illusion of closeness -- offered by Twitter can translate into an increase in loyal fans and more successful touring.
Listed below are a few from the music biz I've noted and keep an eye on. Trust me, there are more.
Who do you follow on Twitter? Add your recommendations in the comments, please, and we might just compile a who's who list for all you tweeps.

john roderick [twitter.com/johnroderick] is mandatory, on top of the list that's already here.

I agree that @johnroderick is pretty funny (although I don't follow him, strangely). As for musicians, I'd also recommend @pampelmoose (Dave Allen from Gang of Four) and @kristinhersh.
There was one band I followed (not going to mention by name) that I had to stop because they filled up my Twitter feed every day with @replies and it was too much because every morning there would be 4 pages of "@imaginarychrisb: :-)", "@3imaginarygirls: Ha!", "@JeanineA - maybe."
@popjustice (one of the best pop websites) and @sashafrerejones (The New Yorker's pop critic) are worth following, too.

Kristin Hersh definitely rules the Tweetoverse. Her recent observations about Australia venture into bizarre alternate realities that remain strangely connected to this one.
@RogerMcGuinn sounds like the friendliest guy in the world.
NotHenryRollins is apparently the real Henry Rollins, but he rarely posts anything.
UK DJ @scissorkicks will keep you well apprised of the tastiest UK beers not available to us Amurkians.

A lot of people in the indie music world are talking about Twitter as a way to connect. Lots of music producers, studio owners, etc, too.
Google Docs has been flaky today, but @gcn1 posted a Google Spreadsheet listing a lot of artists/ bands and record labels on Twitter:
Artists, Bands and Musicians on Twitter
@herejam (HereJam label / studio) is me.

I was listening to some Italian downtempo neo-jazz today and couldn't help but keep picturing John Roderick walking across Europe (isn't that in his bio?). Like on one song, he'd be mingling with the people, another song he'd be typing a Twitter entry, another song he'd be climbing a ladder, another and he'd be on a guided tour of a church, another he'd be recreating a battle with a twitter post...all very boring stuff, but my job is boring, plenty of time to waste daydreaming.

I guess viva won't be joining our Facebook group for people who "Used to Like the Long Winters Before I Started Following John Roderick on Twitter and Learned What a Total Douchebag he is."
Seriously. He should go in to hibernation and stay out of the press and cyberspace, quickly.

That's funny - from following his twitters I am convinced he should have his own reality TV show. His tweets are a highlight of my day.
