Tim McGraw is not indie rock

Well, Modest Mouse's reign of terror at the top of the Billboard Album charts was brief. We were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank did it's own sinking to #11 in its second week, getting bumped out of the way by, among others, the new #1 Tim McGraw, NOW 24, Good Charlotte, J-Lo, Young Buck (who?), and Mims (what?). The best indie/alt could show for was the Kaiser Chiefs entering at #45 with Yours Truly, Angry Mob (am I the only one lacking enthusiasm toward this album?)

Of course, this still leaves us two weeks until we can enjoy Conor Oberst perched at the top, staring down at all of creation.

Tim may not play indie-rock music but as a country singer who is a flaming Democrat I can appreciate his indie spirit. I hear he might even run for a political office... most likely governor of Tennessee. Go Tim!

Tim McGraw is not indie rock? I think there is a bull named Fu Manchu that would say otherwise!

I'm with Liz (in this and all things). I don't like Tim's music, but I'm totally down with his liberal, Democratic, sensible ways -- especially in a demographic typically associated with pro-Bush nonsense.

J-Lo and Good Charlotte can totally suck it back and forth. And I'm not-so-excited about the Kaiser Chiefs either, though I haven't heard it myself so can't officially imaginarily comment.

Bring on the Oberst!

Who the hell is "Lil' Flip"? For that matter, who are "Young Buck", "Akon", and "Daughtry"? Seriously, I only recognize about half of the names listed in the top 20...

e,
It sounds like you might need to tune into MTV and VH1 a little more often. Akon is pretty popular with the kids these days. He's also in Gwen Stefani's new video. And come on Dude! I've never watched a single episode of American Idol and even I know who Chris Daughtry is. There is some responsibility that comes with writing about popular culture. The fact that you don't know who Lil Flip and Young Buck are not only tells us that you're white, but that you may not know a single black person.

Monkey Paw, I challenge your claim that you've never seen a single episode of American Idol and I raise you a crush on Sanjaya that you in fact DO know what "New Year's Day" is (especially as a frequenter of VH1 and all).

Wow, just because you don't know bad hip-hop doesn't mean you're a sheltered white boy/girl. There's enough good pop music out there to not have to keep track of all the crap out there too.

Wow Erik, remind me to skip your next house party. If your turntable is afraid to play anything but the new Damien Jurado or Silversun Pickups' offering I think I'll pass. Are you so "indie" that you can't be bothered? If you wanna play who knows more about indie pop history... prepare to be embarrassed. I'll bury you. But I'm also not too proud to know who the current CMT top 10 or yes... who Lil Flip and Young Buck are. Again, if you want to write about music there is some responsibility to know about music that comes with that. And yes Erik, that includes bands besides the endlessly important LCD Soundsystem (insert sarcasm here).

Huh, maybe you missed the "pop" music reference in the last post (oh lord, I'd hate to listen to Jurado or the Pickups all day). Ah well. Maybe you'd enjoy not judging the writers based on just what they write about, but I guess you're too right about everything for that. (insert sarcasm here).

Sorry it took so long to respond, Monkey Paw. I was busy being white and not watching MTV over the weekend.

Nah. I'm a film and theater boy who prefers his entertainment commercial-free. Also, I don't have - or want - cable.

He's also in Gwen Stefani's new video.

Gwen who? (Kidding.)

I've never watched a single episode of American Idol and even I know who Chris Daughtry is.

Wow, I'm ahead of you there, then - I've watched 2 or 3 episodes of AI! Now I really feel all pop-culturey and shit...
