Tonight's Recommended Show: The Frames, Dolorean at the Showbox

The Frames - MySpace.com/TheFramesWatch out kids, there is another Dublin band worth worshiping. The Frames have earned the critical accolades and fans with their intimate rock that raises the bar. They were even voted Best Irish Band in 2004. As an added bonus to their solid six-album catalog(ue), they've been known to belt out the occasional cover song... specifically Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" and Jane's Addition's "Jane Says" giving each song the frenetic, heart wrenching flavor The Frames are famous the world over (even if the US isn't quite aware of it or not).

Of course, all that banter with the thick Irish accent doesn't hurt either.

I saw the Frames a few years ago and have their live cd. It is amazing to hear all those fans singing along like their lives depend on it. Not sure who Dolorean is though. With only 2 acts on the bill, is it an early show?

Hi there,

The show is not an early one... Doors are at 8, show starts around 9, Frames on around 10, I'm guessing (set times have not been finalized yet). See you there!

Crap! I forgot about this show.. don't know if I can go. I first saw them at the former 'Graceland' Mac Con Iomaire is one of my favorite violin/fiddle players. A big influence on my playing and a swell guy too!

I RECOMMEND the show... :)

a decent band, but i'm going to pipe in with an alternate recommendation, explaining why it got an exclamation point -

for those who aren't already aware, dean & britta is dean wareham & britta phillips, formerly of luna. shortly after the band broke up, they started recording as a duo. their arrangements are a happy medium between galaxie 500 & luna, relying mostly on their vocals to carry the song while the melody comes in softly in the background. the lee & nancy comparisons are pretty fair. the triple door is a great venue to show off their talents.

An excellent choice, and I agree -- the Triple Door is the perfect venue for Dean and Britta. Are you going to this show?

Luna was a good band until Britta came along. And now just the two of them... zzzzzzz. Those seats at the Triple Door are recliners, right?

interesting. i thought the band's first sorta mis-step was with "days of our nights" when justin was still the bassist. of the two albums britta was on, "romantica" is one of the better albums in their catalog while "rendezvous" was a rather quiet way to go out.

in the end, though, the relative strengths/drawbacks almost completely comes back to dean's songwriting. he wrote the lyrics & hooks for almost all of their material.
