Not sick, not well
Submitted by imaginary dana on May 11, 2007.I'm not sure how Sean Nelson's gonna feel about this, but I love this work place tribute to Harvey Danger's 1990's mega-hit "Flagpole Sitta" as lip synced by what looks to be the coolest and most attractive office workers I've ever seen (presumably after many beers on a Friday afternoon).
Are you guys hiring? I'd love to see the Holiday Office party they throw...

I like the tune. Sean writes damn funny lyrics, even if the wit has been dulled with repeated listens.

Sorry Dana. ‘Flagpole Sitta’ is a TERRIBLE song!!!!! There’s really no getting around it.

The song may have been overplayed, but it really is catchy -- and witty. Just what I like. Plus, I really want to publish zines and rage against machines...
Who ARE these cute workers by the way? I want to work at this office! They are so darling.

I woulda thought this was shot during the dot-com boom of like eight years ago -- looks like the typical ubercool loft office populated by good-lookin' 20-something hipsters -- if not for the SILF (Sandwich I'd Like to F**k?????) t-shirt ...

If you girls are counting “publish zines and rage against machines” as wit, then I really think you need a break from the world of blogging. I have to agree with the other posts. The song is just awful.

Can't say I ever liked it. I think it exists on my iPod as a reminder of bygones eras.

You're free to disagree with me, of course, but I dig the song, publishing zines and raging against machines and all...

I'm fairly sure that at this point, not even the guys in Harvey Danger like that song any more. Most HD fans I know skip over it when listening to the album (which is much less saccharine than F Sitta).
I'd say the folks that still get giddy when it is played are the same folks that have fun/nice memories associated with it... which is GREAT for them. For the folks that hate it, they just fell victim to having it stuffed down there throats 400 too many times. For what it's worth, I'm guessing that it has served as a good gateway drug into other things in the HD catalog for people who have otherwise gone down the path of pure glossy consumer music.
And I would say that video is from the dot com era. Haven't employers figured out that it is bad luck to have ping pong tables in the break room?

Flagpole Sitta is a glorious song. If Sad Sweetheart had oversaturated the airwaves in the same manner I'm positive people would be saying the same thing about THAT song in 5 more years. But since it didn't, it's still considered a gem.
It's a tough argument to say Flagpole Sitta isn't a well-crafted, smartly written, slickly produced song.
Calling it a black eye, from a musical standpoint, is harsh business and a little unnecessary. From a commercial standpoint, maybe, MAYBE, if it weren't for Sean's reputation of being an all-around brilliant guy, then I'd have to agree. But I have a hard time believing that a large mass of people began holding grudges against our city for that one song.
I think a perfect comparison would be that Napoleon Dynamite movie. It's a hilarious, well-written and produced film, but it'll be a good ten years before I willingly sit down and watch it again, and a large portion of that comes from it's overwhelmingly succesful marketing tactics (aka images/quotes/merchandise being shoved in my face by every Hot-Topic-Shopping-Clowncore-Kid in the NW).
Anyone willing to agree with that one?

I agree that neither Napoleon Dynamite nor Harvey Danger are worth us wasting this much time on them. That song is just dumb. There’s no denying that!

Can we all agree that this is possibly one of the worst songs ever? This is a black eye on the Seattle Music Scene.
