"My Drug Buddy" by the Lemonheads
So, Juliana Hatfield lived with Evan Dando. This was legend in Boston. She claims that she never "did anything" with Evan Dando beyond play music and eat ice cream. Heck, she said that she thought Ben was the cute Lemonhead, not hunky Evan. Whether this is to be believed or not is unimportant. What is important is that the Lemonheads' It's a Shame About Ray, possibly the most Juliana-filled Lemonheads album ever, is simply one of the best albums of the 1990's. Yes, it helps for me to be from Boston to believe this, but listening to songs like "My Drug Buddy" (shortened to merely "Buddy" when Atlantic Records got all nervous-like). Evan and Juliana sound beautiful together, mellow and gentle. Sure, the song is about enabling Evan to do more drugs that anyone this side of Keith Richards, but hey, he really found his stride on It's a Shame About Ray. (N.B., please, forget about the awful cover of "Mrs. Robinson" tacked onto the album well after its release. The song is not part of the official canon of the album and really makes my skin crawl.) Whatever relationship Evan and Juliana boarded back in late 80s Boston, we may never know, but I, for one, am glad they didn't miss it.

Juliana Hatfield wrote a scathing letter to our local rag The Weekly Dig last year, setting it all straight once and for all. Hey Erik, keep suggesting that she and Evan may have gotten it on and maybe you'll get a letter from Juliana too!

I mean, I understand why... after all, who wants to admit that she/he didn't intercept the "Mrs. Robinson" cover given her proximity to the situation.

Spike Jonze?!
And I find it bizarre that Juliana started down this road of clarifying her sex life by defending Soul Asylum. Of course, Dave Pirner did date Winona Ryder. Now there's a thought! Pirner-Ryder-Hatfield threesome! Both wonderful and horrifying!

I just read that article (thanks for the awesome linkage Betsy!) -- and isn't it a bit highschool to be concerned with conversations about who people say you lost your virginity too and whether or not folks are talking about it? Perhaps she's still living in the 1990s?
For the record, I'd like to officially claim I lost my virginity to Spike Jonze.

Wow, you guys are harsh. I thought it was pretty cool when Juliana took on the Dig, which is a real smarmy and cooler-than-thou local rag that totally deserved it. They print all kinds of snarky comments like that and it's great that she stepped up to the plate to call them on it.

Are you saying that because you're jealous that I lost my virginity to Spike Jonze?

I was just talking about this album with my guy over the weekend. He says he's relistened to it recently and it doesn't hold up, but I can't (or don't want to) believe it. I sold the disc years ago in a haste of downsizing and am thinking I want to refind it in a used bin somewhere. Or download the good tracks...which according to Erik may be all of 'em save for the distressing cover!
