Tonight in Seattle:

Rhett Miller

Don't miss: Rhett Miller tonight at the Triple Door {with Shelby Earl!}

Longstanding imaginary favorite Rhett Miller is nothing if not consistent, and if you want to spend your night listening to sharply crafted, well-delivered odes about girls, cars, and the ensuing heartache between, you'd best get yourself to the Triple Door tonight. The Old 97's frontman will be headlining Seattle's best dine-while-you-swoon venue, and while his show is well worth the entirety of the ticket price, local songstress Shelby Earl will be opening up the show.

Shelby's been keeping busy with her own shows, opening for Ben Gibbard, and putting the finishing touches on a new album {read our imaginary interview here for more on that}, and if you haven't heard her compelling, storyteller croon yet, you're truly missing out. Give a listen at her Facebook page, or spin this track from her last album, Burn The Boats:

Recommended show + free tickets: Rhett Miller at the Crocodile {6/22}

{Rhett Miller / by Victoria VanBruinisse}Whether he's taking the stage alone or with the rest of his band, the Old 97's, one thing is for certain: Rhett Miller knows how to put on a show. We had an incredible time when he last came through town and stopped at the Triple Door, sharing the night with Dan Mangan and plowing through his opening songs in a way we'll never forget: some sound issues cropped up about a verse into his first song, "This Is What I Do," leaving him to belt out the whole song (and the one following) acapella while soundfolks furiously scrambled to fix his connections during the performance. I'm gonna sing this song forever about a girl that I once knew / And how she is always leaving, this is what I do / This is what I do for a living, this is what I do he howled, never missing a beat -- in the face of what might have been a nightmarish start to his set, he instead generated an energy that was positively un-fuck-with-able. SWOON. We can still hear the cheers and thunderous applause! And before that, of course, there was the show where a good portion of the imaginary staff turned Rhett-O-Sexual, spending a night down at the Showbox with all of the Old 97's that included a private soundcheck, a sweaty, serial-lady-killer set of excellent music (with an extra button undone, 'natch), and more fun than we'd ever dreamed we could have had out together at a show.

So, suffice it to say, we loves us some Rhett Miller! And hopefuly you've already sold on all the do that Rhett does, but just in case you're not, we want you to come and see what all the fuss is about firsthand -- on us! Yep, we've got a pair of tickets to give away to Rhett Miller's solo show at the Crocodile this Friday. Just send an email to tig {at} threeimaginarygirls {dot} com with the subject line "ThisIsWhatIDo" sometime between now and 10a on Thursday, June 21st. We'll choose a winner on Thursday morning and notify you by email that you're on the guest list for Friday night's show. Simple as that! Good luck!

Photoessay: Rhett Miller and Dan Mangan at the Triple Door

{Rhett Miller / by Victoria VanBruinisse}

We had the pleasure of spending our evening at the Triple Door this past weekend with Rhett Miller and Dan Mangan, both performing sparser-than-sparse stripped-away acoustic sets for our eager ears. Armed with little more than their guitars and the soundsystem -- for Rhett, not even the latter, as the sound was cutting in and out during the first two songs of his set -- these two young men managed to bring their respective houses down. Dan Mangan's set was fun, earthy, and shockingly reverent at times; the high point coming at the end as he led the whole house in a rousing, repetitive final chorus during "Robots" as he stood on the top level of the front-row tier of booths.

And Rhett's set, on the other hand, was very -- well, Rhett. Full-frontal Rhett-O-Sexual-ness poured out of him, as he literally didn't miss a beat belting his first two songs out (without amplification on his instrument or voice) from the edge of the stage. Once the volume came back, he did his sweet-croonin', hip-shakin' performance as only he can, finishing each tune to thunderous applause. Somewhere along the line, someone told Rhett Miller to always leave 'em wanting more -- and that's exactly what he did.

There's still time to get to Portland for MusicFest Northwest this weekend!

{MFNW 2010, Pioneer Courthouse Square / by Victoria VanBruinisse

There's still time-a-plenty to get your Friday donewith and head on down to Portland for this year's installment of what's quickly becoming our favorite regional city-wide music festival, MusicFest Northwest. For four sweet nights (well, five technically, if you count the goings-on around town that started Wednesday) some of the best local and national-worthy acts sweep in and take over our hip sister city. There's a little something for everyone, and we can state from direct experience that you will have a hell of a weekend should you make the venture down south! The price is reasonable (although we can't recommend the line-skipping VIP wristband privileges enough), the city is bikeable, driveable and parkable, and there's plenty to do in your late-late off-hours around town to keep things... well, let's just say 'entertaining.'

Sleep in, fill your sunny days with KEXP in-studios at the Doug Fir {full lineup available here}, and get your nightlife on at our recommended {** = MEGA recommended} shows below -- scheduling conflicts included:

Don't forget: Rhett Miller at the Triple Door {9/10}

Well, color our little "Dream Weaver"-playing, toe-tapping, swoon-laden-at-the-extra-undone-button hearts happy: it's September! And that means Rhett Miller's Triple Door show is finally happening. This Saturday. He's playing solo {!!!!!}, and none other than our favorite Canada-bred Dan Mangan is opening up the show. Who needs summer with a night like this on the books??

We already ran a superfan-style ticket giveaway a few months back on this one, but wanted to remind you that this is going to be one you don't want to miss this weekend. If you haven't done your body good already, get on it before it sells out: as of this moment, tickets are still available over at the Triple Door site here.

I propose "Merle Haggard Miller." Or, nodding to recent history, how about "Johnny??" That would nod to both the recent unfortunate passings: Johnny Cash and John Ritter.

Which, for our readers at home who haven't gotten to the B/C section of their Trouser Press Guide, is just about as funny as someone asking you about a Jack White song and you saying you only know the White Stripes version.
