Imaginary DVD Picks: Hamlet with vampires, and seriously disturbing horror from Lars Von Trier

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead: Basically, some hip arthouse dude directing Hamlet discovers that there’s a vampire turning his cast into blood-sucking fiends, because Shakespeare stole the story from their master (what?). The cover art for this makes me cringe, but the trailer is charming enough that I’m curious—it could be all right, or it could be SO bad it’s good. It’s got Jeremy Sisto in it, so I’m not sure I care which.

Antichrist: I usually find that people either really love or really hate films directed by Lars Von Trier, and this one seems to be no exception. A creepy thriller/acid trip/horrifically violent vision of a mother disintegrating into madness after her son dies, I’m still not sure what it all means (especially the talking animals), but I do know that I think it’s kind of brilliant. Warning: In case you haven’t heard all the controversy about this one, there are some DEVASTATING mutilation scenes in this film—so it’s definitely not for the faint of heart.
