Old-ish news, as reported in Saturday's Yakima Herald (of all places):
After two failed attempts to make Washington the 41st state with a poet laureate, the Senate on Thursday passed House Bill 1279 by an overwhelming 45-2 vote. Having already cleared the House, the measure now awaits Gov. Chris Gregoire's signature to become law.

What surprises me is that Washington state doesn't already have a poet laureate. I mean, my red-ass, middle-American, Dixie-flag-wavin' home state does!
