Three Imaginary Girls is a Seattle-based website that showcases the great music of the Northwest to music lovers worldwide. The site launched in June 2002 to document the show-going escapades of three music fans with boundless enthusiasm for the burgeoning music scene around them.

Since that time, the site has grown to include reviews of albums, live music, film, interviews and more, in Seattle and beyond. The site thrives on constantly discovering and nurturing great new bands and sharing them with the rest of the {imaginary} world.

Three Imaginary Girls have also booked music showcases, contributed to other music publications (including the KEXP blog, Seattle Sound Magazine, Tablet Magazine, and Music for America), and the imaginary editorial staff have made countless guest radio appearances on KEXP 90.3fm and KUOW 94.9fm and have been featured in the pages of The Stranger and the Seattle Weekly.

Three Imaginary Girls were voted “MVP of Seattle Music 2004” by readers of the Seattle Weekly, and were listed in Seattle Magazine’s 2004 Most Influential People issue as well as Seattle Sound’s 2006 Most Influential in Seattle Music issue. One of our founders was crowned a Nerd of Note by Seattle Magazine and we were even mentioned on ESPN and in the pages of Jane magazine and Paste Magazine.

All of this makes us extremely humbled, grateful, and appreciative to you and the wonderful city of Seattle.

Who are the Three Imaginary Girls?

The site was started in 2002 by two extremely enthusiastic music fans: Dana and Liz. Over the years, our list of lead imaginaries grew and morphed, to where it is now – with the editorial team consisting of: Liz (founder, editor, all that) and Amie (editorial, head of all things film, etc.).

We have been extremely lucky to have a lot of really talented and kind writers and photographers join Team Imaginary since 2002.

Our dearest Embracey has been at the ready with wise counsel (and brilliant words) since the very beginning. Chris Estey has kindly shared his amazing musings since the very early days. Our calendar editor, Jason/sera(tone)n, who we met via the imaginary message board, has kept our show listings chock full ‘o recommendations since… well, the days there were message boards!

In case you were wondering how it all happens behind the scenes… TIG has always been a volunteer endeavor, and although we have enjoyed years of seeing some of the best shows in Seattle and amazing opportunities like having a lot of Visqueen fun, having coffee with Brandon Walsh(!!!) and getting up close and personal with the SIFF red carpet for Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing, there has never been a paycheck for anyone on staff. All the expenses have been covered by us—with the occasional help of a handful of donations, ads, and events that have come in over the years (for which we remain so incredibly grateful).

Want to join Team Imaginary?

If you are into the sorts of things we cover on this site (Seattle music, enthusiastic mixtapes, film) and want to join the team, just email us with:

  • a run down of your favorite songs/bands/desert island discs or films (list content based on what you’d like to write about)
  • a list of the kinds of things you would like to write about on TIG
  • a couple links to your writing samples (or attachments if they aren’t on the web)

As noted above, TIG is an all volunteer staff and the paychecks are “imaginary.”

What does it mean to be imaginary?

Since Three Imaginary Girls posted our first live show review in 2002, we’ve published over 8,300 articles; we’ve shared stories from as far away as a small show in Blackpool, UK or NYC, always with our heart in Seattle.

We’ve chronicled crushes and sadness, bantered about white belts and beards. You and TIG spent our early days together as we all stumbled from Chop Suey (seriously, those hazardous level steps) and Graceland (now El Corazon and the Funhouse) to The Crocodile Cafe (now the Crocodile with marble bathrooms).

All our (and your) favorite bands took to the stage and we were all there – sharing these best of times… and most of all, spotlighting Seattle’s amazing local talent, events, and personality.

Our motivating force is simple: we heart Seattle and our Pacific Northwest music & film scene – and we want to embolden and share that excitement with others. Like you, we think that the right mix tape with a good dose of twee-pop can fix anything.

Want to help support Three Imaginary Girls?

We absolutely adore you for helping to further our cause by just being a part of the website. Your support, be it by an ad placement, pocket change or simply by a wacky handshake, is what keeps us going.

TIG has always been a volunteer endeavor, and although we have enjoyed years of seeing some of the best shows in Seattle and amazing opportunities to meet incredible folks like yourself, there has never been a paycheck for anyone on staff. All the expenses are covered by us—with the occasional help of a handful of donations, ads, and events that have come in over the years (for which we remain so incredibly grateful).

Currently our annual hosting and website maintenance costs are in the range of $1,000 a year. Your support – whether it be by reading our site, showing love to our advertisers, advertising your great thing with us, or giving a donation – is so greatly appreciated.

We can’t thank you enough for being a part of such a kind and amazing arts community.
