Three Imaginary Girls

I have to admit that upon the first listen of Oompa! by Sabrina Chap, I wasn’t really sure if I loved it, or hated it. But three songs in the 2nd time around, I was undeniably and totally HOOKED. It’s filled with Ragtime piano tunes and witty lyrics sung by a honey-voiced goddess. The entire album evokes images of gin-soaked prohibition-era parties, and I immediately wanted to drag out my flapper dress and herd my friends to a speakeasy (half-wondering if I could convince them to pop in this CD). While most of the songs make me want to party away the night in vintage splendor, there’s one that cracks my heart wide open and squeezes out every last drop of life, “Little White House” – I’m pretty sure if I saw her perform it live, I would die.

The multi-talented Ms. Chap (she’s also a successful playwright, poet, and short story writer) has a few performances coming up in Seattle, so your heart can get cracked open too.  Catch one of her racier shows at The ReBar on 2/24 or 2/25, or see her play at The Rendezvous with The Gallus Brothers on 2/27. (+ she has some lectures/readings at Seattle University). Take a look/listen to the video for “Never Been a Bad Girl” above and you’ll be a goner just like me.
