Three Imaginary Girls

Seattle's Indie-Pop Press – Music Reviews, Film Reviews, and Big Fun

Whip It: I was pleasantly surprised by this one – admittedly, it looks like it’ll play out as a predictable coming-of-age comedy, but somehow it worked itself into a great story. Plus the roller derby bouts are an awful lot of fun to watch. Ellen Page (as always) is adorable as the teen misfit trying to find her way, but my favorite thing about this movie was seeing Zoe Bell on the track. This is pretty much the perfect girly flick, minus the gimmick of Drew injuring herself repeatedly. Good job on your directing debut, Ms. Barrymore!

Bright Star: I’m not normally a fan of Campion’s films, but the story here plus the fact that it’s on many a top 10 list this year, intrigues me. Keats & Fanny Brawne tortured by their heart’s desires? Ohhellyes. You know I loves me some period romance, so I’m all over this one.

B-Girl: I wish I had serious dancing skillz, but since I don’t, I have to settle for watching other people dance and then pretend I’m them…or something…(other people do that, right??) um, yeah. Anyway – this flick is by first time filmmaking duo Emily and Elizabeth Dell and focuses on a girl dancer immersed in the hip-hop scene. Here’s hoping it’s better than Honey (it sure looks like it will be – especially since it stars REAL dancers).
