An Education: Set in London during the 60s, Carey Mulligan is beautiful and perfect as vulnerable 16-year-old Jenny, who falls for the charms of Peter Sarsgaard’s (HELLO NURSE) very suave and charming – and much older – David. The story plays out pretty typically, so there’s not much surprise here, and I found myself wishing they’d spent more time in Paris, but I still enjoyed watching it (especially all the clothes, cars, and sets) and intend to give it another run through to see if it I like it better the second time around. Bonus: Alfred “throw me the idol, I throw you the whip” Molina as Jenny’s over-protective but easily duped father.

The Killer: Forget all that Americanized crap that John Woo put out starting in the 90s – if you want to see some action that totally rocks, you need to go back a bit to Woo’s Chinese films. Chow Yun Fat kicks some serious butt as an assassin in this twisty thriller with some of the best camera work (featuring the birth of Woo’s signature double-gun shootouts) I’ve ever seen. It’s so good; I used to own it on Laser Disc. That’s right. LASER DISC. And I’m adding the blu-ray disc to my Amazon shopping cart right now…

Real Housewives of New York: Season 1: Oh, I know what you’re thinking. These shows are stupid. How can you even watch them, much less recommend them? Well, let me tell you. The “real” housewives shows are the TV equivalent of tabloid mags. They’re comforting trash when I’m feeling sick, are perfect for wasting time or having on in the background while I nap – and I guarantee you, they will make you feel a million times better about your life, simply because you’re not them. Season 1 features controlling Jill, smart-ass single girl Bethany, The Countess LuAnn, prone to hysterics Ramona and socially awkward Alex (who’s surgically attached to her creepy husband, Simon).
