I have to apologize for not giving you more advance notice on the Anthonie Tonnon show at Barboza on Saturday night that I urge you all to see.
A couple weeks ago, my good friend with amazing taste in music {Corianton Hale} emailed this important message:
Anthonie Tonnon played for about seven people at Lo-Fi two weekends ago, and he slayed it like a full house at Carnegie Hall.
He’ll be in town again on November 12th – DON’T MISS IT.
If you like Jens Lekman, Parenthetical Girls, Cass McCombs, Magnetic Fields, or Darren Hanlon, BE THERE!!!
And listen to his new record (Successor) over, and over, and over.
I’d never heard of anyone named Anthonie before. Within minutes of finding my first song by Mr. Tonnon, I dove deep into listening to everything I could find. I’m hooked.
I think you will be (and should be), too!
- He’s suave like Jens Lekman and coy, punchy and witty like Darren Hanlon.
- He hails from New Zealand so there is the use of “zed” in his songs rather than the pedestrian pronunciation, “zeeeeee.”
- His songs can punch you in the gut right when you least expect it. The psychology in “Timing” chills me to the core, like the most cutting David Gedge lyric.
Best news of the week? We can see him perform this Saturday {November 12, 2016} at the mighty, yet intimate, Barboza. He’s opening up for the incredible band, The Veils.
It’s not all heavy and heartbreak – make sure to listen through to the 9.30 minute mark (lol, film about his generation)!
